I don’t know why he persists in finishing up everything I sketch. Usually it’s very handy, but in this case I’m not sure these were ever meant for human eyes - but now that he’s worked so hard on them, I have to post them. Q_Q Well, for better or worse, quite obviously they’re Animal Crossing villager versions of us - technically Cranky Cat and Smug Rabbit, catchphrases not withstanding.
I didn’t want to let November go entirely by without a post. I’ve been very quiet because I’ve been very sick, and it was never supposed to be this crazy drawn-out languishing, but I’ve been sick so long I’m starting to worry this is how invalids are made, haha. I feel really guilty every time one of you beautiful individuals I love ask if I’m any better, so I’ll just stick a ‘sick till further notice’ sign here.
If Once I’m back to something approaching normal, you’ll know for sure!
Grandma: Parents these days. Remember how I tutored you when you were a wee bairn? Didn't know it once, didn't know it twice, and I'd drag you to the bathroom and beat you with the cane! Then, when you'd cried till you couldn't cry no more, I'd hose you down and get back to it. You sure knew then!
Jun: Yes, Grandma.
Grandma: That was the happiest time of our lives: studying and sporting all day, no pressure or nothing - not a care in the world!
Jun: Yes, Grandma.
First- Yes. Loki. Yes. -pets- Also, I may have died more than a little at the Community gif and now know what to be looking for when I watch Thor 2. <3 THIRD: Damn this is pretty. Everything you do is so damn pretty I could cry.
Q_Q Lolli I can’t tell you how much that means to me. Also, how psyched I am that you watch Community (BUT OF COURSE).
Well, I’m not immune.
It used to be a super quick sketch and I was just going to post this, honest to goodness, but Maxx talked me into actually lining it in exchange for flats. Still, he couldn’t resist the skin shading. I did it in the non-appearing fur coat because I avoid work wherever possible (and because of a massive in-joke that culminates in “and asked him how he liked her new silk gown.”) The faint texture is courtesy of ~Falln-Stock.

Superlate replies! (Ok I am basically the same whether on Gaia or Tumblr. Q_Q)
Winning Phonies? =D /shot
JUN THESE ARE GORGEOUS AND AMAZING and I LOVE that you did hockey (although, oh no, that stick is all kinds of broken!) Your work is always so great!
AHH as soon as we rolled hockey I was like, “OH NO WE CAN’T DO THAT, ATMA WILL KNOW WHEN I MESS IT UP!” and Maxx was like, “WE HAVE TO DO THAT. ATMA.” And arghargh have I ever told you how much I appreciate your comments and how incredibly much they mean to me? ;_; Thank you so much, bby!
Maxx: If I'd known you were gonna be sick all month, I wouldn't have booked the tickets ahead of time. You sure you'll be able to make Thor 2?
Jun: *treading the valley of death* I'm doing my best. Though...since it's Thorsday I'll be Loki if I'm just a little horse -
Maxx: *GENERAL HOMOCIDE* NO JURY WILL CONVICT ME
I keep fucking up my right arm. But in between episodes, Maxx and I had a quick and extremely dubious sketchjam that evolved from a running gag about a couple of, um, half-baseball and F1-related mahou senshi things I’ve been riffing on while we’ve been on the road. “I would play,” I can’t remember which one of us said, “a vs game with sports-based magical girls,” and as the night wore on and our decisions got worse, we agreed that a “boys’ side” was only natural. Casually grabbing a couple of internet lists, we randomised numbers and these were the, uh, outcomes. Costume design is my nemesis so I don’t know what I was thinking from the start, but you could argue that that’s the least of their concerns. I feel sorta bad that the anatomy on the girls suffered from jamming eq into a limited space, but I can’t say the boys turned out much better… I think Magical Tennis is my overall favourite, but that isn’t even really a magical girl outfit, is it? It’s a tennis dress! Q_Q
We’ve been really quiet ‘cos it’s been pretty bad, but virtual Halloween is coming up and something’s got to be done about that. What are you doing for virtual Halloween? :D
There’ve been some nice arguments taking the character design aspect of your exposition to task, so I’m just going to directly address the contradiction of your big points on racism.
(I’ve obviously snipped the rest of this post and discussion thread, so if anyone looking at this would like the full experience, do continue to 7nights’ journal post.)
We naturally prefer attractive people (look at hollywood) and those who appear similar to ourselves for evolutionary breeding purposes. It makes more sense to cast a wide net then to pinpoint increasingly specific races and ethnicities and risk alienating everyone else. And I can’t really blame them for doing this. Of course it’s good to have plenty of diversity in your movie lineup, but you also want to draw as few lines of possible between an audience member and the character.
Calling for a princess of every different race and ethnicity is just silly. If a little Korean girl can’t connect with Mulan because she’s Chinese, or Cinderella because she’s British, that’s a problem with the girl, not the movie. I have never not been able to sympathize with a character because they’re black, or a woman, or a talking dog. I want to see all peoples represented fairly, and whitewashing is not something that should happen. However arguing that the next princess should be X race so that people of X race can identify with her is flawed thinking. In that case I call for the next princess to be a short Scottish-Polish American male with an interest in art and science, because I am incapable of enjoying a movie unless my identity is pasted onto the screen. Damn is it ever hard to find a movie I like.
TLDR; Disney isn’t doing this because they’re sexist or racist. They’re using a strategy to ensure as many people can put themselves in the shoes of a princess as possible. It isn’t their fault, it’s just the way our brain works. We’ve only noticed the great similarity because the limitations of 3D animation have really brought it out. I don’t want whitewashing, but if you need your own race to be a Disney princess in order to enjoy the movie… you’re probably a bit racist yourself.
You put forth that Disney defaults to attractive white characters as their majority white audience (as implied by “as many people”) best “subconsciously [connect]” to thus, while “pinpointing increasingly specific races and ethnicities” would “risk alienating everyone else”, maintaining that this is not so much “sexist or racist”, but merely the way human brains “work.” You then state that if a “little Korean girl can’t connect” with protagonists of other races, “that’s a problem with the girl,” and that “if you need your own race to be a Disney princess in order to enjoy the movie…you’re probably a bit racist yourself.” But, as mentioned above, you absolved Disney of racism by pointing to the biological limitations of people requiring a protagonist who “appear[s] similar to [themselves] for evolutionary breeding purposes” to “put themselves in the shoes of a princess.” What is the difference between the big white “our” whose “brain[s just work this way]” and “a little Korean girl” that your implied white majority audience just reacts so “naturally,” in “just the way our brain works”, while the “little Korean girl” is the one with “a problem”, and is “probably a bit racist [herself]” if she “need[s her] own race” in order to enjoy the movie? If you consider the former natural and biologically coded for requiring a protagonist that appears similar to themselves for “put[ting] themselves in [those] shoes”, should the latter not be too if she has a problem putting herself into the shoes of someone that doesn’t appear similar to herself? If you consider the latter problematic and racist, should the former not be too if they require a protagonist that appears similar to themselves? If it is natural, why are you blaming the hypothetical little Korean girl? If it is racist, why are you endorsing the racist behaviour of the majority and absolving Disney of racism? Even if you argue that Disney is merely safeguarding their assets as a business by pandering to the racist majority, is that really an acceptable stance from a company that is supposedly dedicated to childhood morality? Is that really acceptable to you? If it is, then…you’re probably a bit racist yourself.
Jun, last Friday: Great. Years later I finally get why people love to draw Hogwarts AUs and nobody cares any more, wtg me.
Jun, this Friday: Great. I’ve been doodling this Hogwarts AU all week and then they announce Newt Scamander - but I haven’t posted any so it looks like I’m walking in 15 minutes late with Starbucks, wtg me.
…The get is robes, by the way. Voluminous, obscuring robes that lend well to my single-line-scribble kick. We’re rushing a couple of clashing deadlines these couple of weeks so we’re a little non-existent right now.
AWRGBARGH!!! Oh Ruribby, thank you so much. ;_; You are my heart’s ease.
Jun: This might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever drawn.
Maxx: Hmmm…nnno, that’s not possible.
A quickie; I couldn’t decide between regular-AC and gijinka and ended up at cartoon-furry which I am incapable of. Maxx got Diana for me! I’ve been obsessed with her ever since
I saw her come on look at her she’s meant for meshe was in one of the villages we scrapped in our initial ideal-native-fruit-and-layout hunt when we started the game. He says he just happened to be in the right place at the right time…which severely worries me because she came from Nowhere in this bloodstained shirt.
My horrible week ended, bizarrely enough, with a live showing of The Phantom of the Opera. I’ve never been able to come to grips with digital inking, so I’ve been trying this ‘technique’ where I just…use the default PS brush on size 9 and scrawl in the lines, reasoning that 1. it’s not like I’m ever gonna do anything with my ‘art’ 2. nobody’s gonna see or care anyway. Many phenomenal artists do single-lined insouciance heartachingly well, and I thought to ape the effect through inadequacy, essentially. So I came back and scrawled out ‘Meg and Christine, in better, more gossipy, chorus girl days’; I don’t know why I thought I’d throw on some sloppy colours to go with the sloppy lines, but I started out with a dark bg that I later scrapped and so now they are Malibu Barbie-tanned. Q_Q The bg is now transparent for a fighting chance. Also, I like squares. I like squares so much, I keep cropping stuff into squares even after drawing out almost the full A4 sheet.
